Eligibility and the invitation process

The National Innovation Visa is a permanent visa for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in an eligible area. It is invitation-based; an impressive career does not make an invitation or visa automatic.

We consider the person’s achievements, the recognition they have received and the evidence available to support their significance. The relevant area and current priorities need to be examined against the actual record.

Assessing a record of achievement

Depending on the field, useful material may include publications, citations, patents, awards, professional recognition, commercial impact and independent commentary. Its relevance and quality matter more than a large bundle of documents.

We examine what the evidence establishes, where it needs explanation and what independent support may be available. Nomination requirements also need a separate assessment.

Research and technical achievement

Some applications depend on explaining the significance of research or intellectual property. Our technical IP experience helps us assess those achievements alongside the immigration requirements.

A joint consultation covers immigration and technical IP questions in the same appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lodge a National Innovation Visa application without an invitation?

No. Home Affairs must invite you before you can apply for the subclass 858 National Innovation Visa. Submitting an expression of interest is a different step from applying for the visa.

Does a PhD or high salary qualify someone on its own?

No. The route concerns an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement, together with the applicable visa requirements. A qualification, salary or job title does not by itself establish that record.

Can sporting achievement be relevant?

Yes. Sport is one of the eligible areas identified by Home Affairs, alongside a profession, the arts, and academia and research. The individual’s achievements and the current framework still need assessment.
