Can I move to Australia and keep running my company?

Often, yes, but it depends on the visa. Some visas let you keep working for your overseas business, while others tie your work to an Australian sponsor and role. The right move is to choose the visa around how you actually plan to work, not the other way round.

What decides the answer

Five things usually decide it: the work conditions of the visa, who pays you (your overseas company or an Australian entity), where your clients and team are, your partner's work rights, and your tax and corporate position in both countries.

We advise on the visa side and work alongside your accountants and corporate advisers overseas and in Australia, because tax residency and company structure questions need their input.

How it works on the main routes

Permanent visas, such as the National Innovation visa. Permanent residents generally have no work restrictions, so running your existing company is usually possible. National Innovation visa ↗

Employer-sponsored visas. Your work is generally tied to the sponsored role and sponsor, so running a separate overseas business alongside it needs careful structuring. 482 sponsorship ↗

Your partner as the main applicant. Your work rights follow the conditions of the visa you hold as a secondary applicant, and these vary by route.

Visitor visas. These suit business visits such as meetings, conferences and negotiations. They are not designed for living in Australia and running a business from here.

Before your strategy session

Send us a short summary: your role and shareholding, how you are paid, where your team and customers are, your plans for an Australian entity, your partner's situation, and when you hope to move. We then compare the realistic routes in one 45-minute call.

Frequently asked questions

Can my partner work in Australia too?

On many routes a partner included in the application receives work rights, but conditions vary by visa. We check your partner's position on each option, because a move has to work for both of you.

Should I get tax advice as well?

Yes. Moving to Australia can change your tax residency and how your company is treated. We recommend advice from accountants in both countries, and we are happy to work alongside them.
